pigs in boreal bog land?!

Hey all, I have been harvesting from this blog for a long time now and have finally decided to dive in.

...I have done  A LOT of research and am still at a loss.

PIGS, I need them, I want them. I've recently bought land in down east Maine, It is mostly young boreal forest/bog land, some would call it a terror for farming, But it was cheap and we have blueberries, are on a coastal river and it was cheap.

So here is my dilemma...I would love to get feeder pigs to do some clearing for me in an area where id like to do hugels in the future. There is A LOT of alder, the small grey? alder we get here, making it very hard to get through. Some of it is boggy and some is not. Will the pigs develop any sort if issues with their feet from the boggy areas? It is not as though it is STRAIGHT bog, or very deep. I know they are good at their jobs, so is it bad for them to be turning up the peat? Will they eat peat?  Any other random advice for this kind of forest???

Kati, sorry  to say that I don't have an answer for you, but I did want to say welcome to Permies from a fellow Mainer!  Your new land sounds lovely.  

Are you familiar with Sepp Holzer? His theory is that pigs are specifically to be used for otherwise unusable land - river canyons, steep hills, forest. I would imagine pigs would do well if not fabulously on your land, but I am unfamiliar with your biome.
My own experience with running pigs shows that they not only rapidly "enrich" a piece of land, but they also gradually terrace each paddock by entirely upturning the hillside - leaving more matter toward the downhill than at the start. Seeing as I want terraced paddocks, this is saving me a lot of work.

Mulefoots are reputed to better handle wet ground as I recall...

If it's true peat pog... parts may be floating. That's why filling them doesnt work so good. I am not sure how this would work with pigs, probably a lot of pond creation.

true peat bog it is...i would be okay with slight pond creating! i can divert the water later and put in the hugos. Im mainly concerned that the pigs will be okay. Is Mulefoot a breed then?
