Rushes work great for making baskets, just harvest, sort to size and length, then you can dry them or you can use them green.

The rushes That grow in fresh water swampy areas here around Puget Sound / Salish Sea were woven tightly and made baskets that could hold water. The water could then be heated by adding hot stones to cook food in them. Being holow I think lends to being squeezed tightly where thy cross but expand and cover each other where they overlap.
