I'm working on an organic herb farm in Northwest Montana and today as we were weeding paths in our mandala I discovered several large root masses in an area that's only ever had chamomile growing in it for the three years I've worked with it. It was buried down quite a ways but starting to sprout (today is April 29). It has a massive and we'll developed root system for something we've never seen grow. What I'm wondering is just what it is? Please help, I'm going to attempt loading a picture, but this is my first posting on permies so we'll see.
My guess is Elecampane... but I'm definitely not sure about it. The early growth looks very similar to the elecampane I have growing. If it is elecampane, the root can be used medicinally. https://www.thespruce.com/grow-and-use-elecampane-1762291
Good luck and hope that helps!

The root is the valuable part of this plant as a medicinal, it is best to dry the root then cut into small cubes and dry some more for long term storage.
It has several uses and just a few years ago it was found to also be a good cleanser for chemo patients when brewed into a tea.
