I also do my "composting" like you mentioned that Ruth Stout did, spreading it out on the garden rather than in a
compost pile..it works well for me but sometimes it is kinda messy. If it is too messy, you can grab a few weeds to throw on top to hide the messy stuff..
I felt that the compost pile wasted a lot of the nutrients as they would leach out under the pile, and I tried a tumbler and that too didn't work for me either..but I keep my scraps in a bucket and shred my paper and stuff and toss it in a new place in the garden all year long..and I also will toss in weeds, bark, etc..
I also find it is a heck of a lot less work.
The areas really close to the house have super rich soil, cause when we get lazy we throw it closer to the house..esp in the winter when it is too cold to walk to the farthest areas of the garden.
I do even the coffee grounds, tea bags ..coffee filters..old pizza crusts..etc..but also we tend to have some wild animals that do recycle some things by the next few days..and that doesn't bother us much either..it's really kinda cute to see the opossum out there eating the pizza crust just like people..but sometimes it can be annoying to have the critters too..if so, throw it farther from the house..
