I have a patch of daylilies that are 60 to 80 years old. They went several years (probably a decade) with no care - water, fertilizer, etc.

I bring in no fertilizers on any plants. A top dressing with compost or a light mulch that breaks down seems to do well.

Sometimes the answer is nothing

For me it is simply -keep the freaking deer from eating them!

Compost used to mulch is one of the best along with a high quality unpurified sea salt (about a1/4 cup spread around the planted area) are the best I've found. Check the soil for evidence of fungi, which should be present along with many bacteria. These bulbs (rizomes) respond to good nutrition by spreading, at which point they can be divided.
