Wow April, Indonesia, beautiful!
I would think rosemary would do great there. I need to plant it against a southfacing wall to really get it going. The wall sucks up all the sun in the day and sends the heat back out in the night, I don't think you will have this problem in Indonesia.
What could have gone wrong is that it was too wet. They don't mind rain and stuff, but they don't like it when they're in water all the time. They need drained soils. Not very fertile either. So a
raised bed with a rocky/ sandy soil mix would be good.
How many light hours do you have average, here it likes full sun, maybe in Indonesia, the sun is much brighter and stronger and it will be a shade plant.
Hard to know.
Isn't there some public garden you could visit? Somewhere where they grow mediteranian plants and shrubs in Indonesia? Then you could copy the circumstances and grow some rosemary close to where you live. They are quite easy to propagate from cuttings in winter. But you have no winter.. hmmmm complicated! It's even more complicated for you, because if we want to grow tropical plants we can put up a green house, but how to mimick winter?? Mountain nurseries maybe.
Did you know rosemary is great for hair? I've made 3 liter hydrosols, when my daughter found out it was good for her hair, she used a liter in a week.Takes me three month. Girls!
But on a serious note, i've given some general advice, but find out how it's done by pro's in Indonesia, what soil, what place, what kind of light do uyou need and how to propagate. Maybe seed works better where you are than here. Can't be worse, here it doesn't work for me so far.
Good luck April.
