Anyone have suggestions for fruit trees and vines to go along with an old honey locust tree?

I recently bought a house in Northern Illinois and want to start a food forest in the backyard. I’m grateful to have this 80+ yr old beast as a canopy.

It’s a small yard but the thought was apple, crabapple, and grapes. But I’m new to this and would love some insight.

Any thoughts will help thanks!

Welcome to permies!

In my sun-challenged Chicago yard, I have good luck with the following fruits:

Pawpaw-- this is an understory tree and likes shade as a sapling.  You do need room for at least two small trees for pollination,  and they will send up shoots to form a grove.

Currants-- both the red and black varieties will produce well in part shade. Self-fertile.

Sour cherry-- self-fertile and produce fruit in shade.

Black raspberries-- they produce more in sun, but are so hardy and prolific that you very a decent crop even in shade
