Hey all!

I've read you shouldn't grow brambles (raspberries, blackberries, etc) close to peach trees. But I believe I've seen otherwise within some Permaculture Orchards.

Anyone have any sound advice? Can I grow some raspberries between peach trees?

Thanks!

I have blackberries, salmonberries and thimbleberries ( all wild) about 7 feet from my peach tree, and blackcap raspeberries under a nearby apple tree. The blackcap rapsberries under my apple tree are doing great, and not spreading a lot, and I like that the tree is multi-purpose.  The cane berries near my peach tree don't seem to have any problems, or cause any problems to the peach. BUT, I have blackberries growing under my cherry trees (they just won't leave...),  and my cherries never do well. But they could be not-doing well for all sorts of reasons (bad lighting, too damp, etc).

If I put berries under my trees on purpose, I'd go for something that doesn't spread so fast and is relatively easy to control. You don't want to be digging too much under your tree to thin out berry bramble, and the brambles do make it hard to pick fruit.

I think we get way too worried about what we plant next to what.

Why wouldn’t brambles grow nicely around fruiting trees?  My raspberries like a bit of shade.

Thank you Nicole and Janet.

I’m just triple checking that I’m doing the right thing. Probably overthinking it, but that’s my nature.

I’ve got five “tree trios” going in this spring as well as some tree guilds. I’ll be planting some raspberries and blackberries amongst them and making sure things go as smoothly as possible.

Thanks!
