I was just bouncing about , mentally, as is my wont,  imagining a solar dehydrator made from a file cabinet.
There are a lot of file cabinet smokers out there, but not so many dehydrator designs.
Of course you could combine them, but what if you could heat them in a way other than wood,  charcoal or electric?
Steady burning of wood and char requires some skill.
We could maybe use a small rocket stove and heat a mass of stone, but getting that right might be tough.
Electric heat requires infrastructure.

Candles give off a steady,  low heat.
Tallow or lard candles wouldn't leave any artifical deposits on the food.
If there using oil lamp that could make use of any kind of edible fat, used cooking oil could help preserve other foods.
Perhaps tallow could be burned to refine more tallow?

Could Tallow Smoked  be a new Artisan or  Small Batch?

Tell me what you think.

I guess it depends on whether a person likes the smell/taste of tallow smoke? I get a little grossed out driving by a Burger King myself, lol! But just the heat could be used to raise the temperature without the smoke going through the food. Sounds good if you have plenty of fats to burn for fuel.

I'm not sure if the smell from burger king is actually beef fat, but your point is well taken.
I certainly wouldn't want my food tasting like BW3's smells, for instance.
I love cooking with tallow, and I like the flavor that you get when grilled meat drips fat onto the coals below.
Cancer causing?
Probably.
Anyway, keeping the smoke away from the food should be doable, if that is preferable.
The key idea is to provide a steady source of heat, adding flavor would just be a bonus.

I say, experiment! You never know until you try. It would be nice to have alternatives to electric dehydrators besides solar.

Maybe he went home and went to bed. And took this tiny ad with him:
A rocket mass heater is the most sustainable way to heat a conventional home
