You probably know this, I’ll put it here just in case. When starting them on grain, of any type, or changing feed, it needs to happen gradually. Start with a small quantity and increase slowly every day till you get to the desired amount.
This give time to the rumen bacteria to get used to the new feed.
Some people feed chaffhaye - made in Texas☺️, and add individual grains and other supplements, along with the best grass hay and alfalfa they can make or buy.
If going the route of grains, is best to have them rolled, cracked, or soaked. Whole, unprocessed grains are poorly digested by the rumen.
Having a good salt and minerals protocol goes a long way in avoiding deficiencies, in my opinion.
