Too close to the house?

I was watching a PDC online from here, and someone planted pear trees right next to their house, not only for the fruit, but because it also acted as a source for shade which would help keep the house cooler. I was wondering if this technique could possibly damage the house or its foundation because of the root system. My hope is that the roots aren't a problem and that I can have both a cooler house and the fruit. Any experience, thoughts, recommendations with this theme, "too close"?

a pear tree isn't the mean machine root producer let's say a willow or a river red gum is. Those go deep mining looking for water and food and they may find it by going through your basement wall. Pear's arn't that robust at all, I can't think of many fruit tree's that are.

you may be referring to ME? I have 6 pear trees planted along my deck railings, they aren't by the foundation however, they are 12' out from the foundation. 3 are on the east of my east deck and 3 are s of my s decking. They are dwarfs (although one is already 18') and I will be able to pick some of the fruit from the deck itself. They do cast some shade on the decks as well and also give some privacy.

I have 2 ayers, 1 5 on 1, 1 buerre bosc, 1 red anjou and 1 bartlett...there are also other pears on the property.
