I have a barrel that I removed the ends of to create a tube, and I've been filling it with alternating layers of food scraps and woodchips (to add carbon and prevent smell).

I went out there today and saw a bunch of maggots in my bin, probably due to all of the cooked and raw meat I've been adding. Is there anything I can do to help them decompose everything?
I've noticed that they seem to be staying in the shade, would covering half of the top with something be a good idea? Should I add water?

I gave them some more meat (which they started eating very quickly) as well as some anaerobic compost that had been sealed for half a year. They seemed to really like that as well, but I'm not sure if they were eating it or just enjoying the moisture.

It looks like it's time for me to write you a reality check! Or maybe a tiny ad!
