The Mud Family had been using this rocket heater mass bench for over four years and the chimney was still clean inside. We decided to open up the stratification chamber (bell) for inspection and cleaning just in case.

The first job was to remove the pumice (lava rock) insulation surrounding the potentially "hot bits" of the mass bench so we could get to the cleanout.

Pro tip for all you Rocket Heater People out there: If you are going to make your inspection port removeable for um, inspection purposes, don't cob over the latch.

This was supposed to be a #shorts but there was too much to talk about so you get a tall video.

With the end of the stratification chamber removed you can really get in there and clean things out. At least Laine can. I don't think I would fit.

Stay tuned for Part 4

Verdict: No soot, no creosote, only a little ash from using cardboard to start the fire. Laine was able to clean that up with an ash vacuum in no time.

We are quite pleased with the stratification chamber in the bench design. It heats so evenly over its 12' x 3' surface that it heats the room without getting much above body temperature. There are no hot spots to catch things on fire (like the Christmas tree). Just warm all over.
