Overgrown pickerel can certainly be a problem. Is your
pond situation one where you can weed it back without eradicating? Pickerel does have a number of desirable qualities:
- acts as a biofilter to purify water
- attracts beneficial insects
- nectary plant for
bees and butterflies
-
shelter for dragonfly eggs
- habitat for frogs
- seeds and young leaf stalks are edible
- stabilizes pond banks
So, if some could be removed, perhaps greater pond plant diversity would help keep it under control.
