I have lots of hazelnut bushes on our land and I harvest them early before the squirrels can get them. Do you have any idea what I might plant beneath them for more of a food forest combination? They do tend to create a bit if shade.
Some shade-tolerant plants that grow naturally under hazelnut where I live include low-bush (wild) blueberry, partridgeberry (not tasty but edible & a pretty ground cover), wintergreen. What else can you tell us about your site? I've seen hazelnut in fairly dry to fairly moist conditions, so I don't want to assume too much.

So you also have salal there, another type of wintergreen that I don't have over here near Lake Superior. That could work well. If there's enough moisture, ramps and wild ginger.

If I lived west of the Cascades I'd try salmon berry, Rubus spectabilis. It is shade tolerant but can also do well with more sun. Fruits are big and mild tasting.
