Thank you for the welcome. I have always been fascinated by living off the grid and obsessed with survival shows. I am a 44 year old single woman who's kids have left the nest. I had plans of moving off the grid to Alaska with my male friend, but he recently passed away due to covid complications, so now I am looking at doing it alone, but not looking at Alaska if I'm flying solo. I am just learning everything and really didn't know where to start, so this site is fabulous and informative. I've always lived in the city but have never felt at home. My soul is only at peace when I'm camping in the woods. I plan on asking lots of questions and truly appreciate all of you on here.

Hello everyone. I have been a mostly silent lurker/learner and l thought it was time to say hello. My spouse and I live in Tonasket, Washington. Apple and fruit orchard country near Canada. We retired here 3 years ago on 40 acres and log cabin. We’ve been trying to raise meat goats for personal and dog food. Rethinking that decision after the herd sire went from puppy phase to natural born killer during rut. I think his head maybe eventually mounted on the wall and be a reminder of my ignorance in dealing with animals pumped up on testosterone. It saddens me when the animals pay the price for our mistakes. I will first try and sell him with full disclosure as he does produce nice offspring.

Living this dream after 60+ and alone has it’s challenges. We are hoping to attract likeminded people to help us for reduced rent or space for a tiny house.  We are also starting to raise rare (to the US) livestock guardian dogs (Pyrenean Mastiffs). Thanks for listening, Brian and Dale

Jaime and Brian I enjoyed reading your submissions.

Jaime, my advice would be to pursue the Alaska dream. I made the decision to do it solo about 4 years ago. This is a magical place. My only two complaints ever are the mosquitoes and the mosquitoes. Luckily my enemies’ enemy is my friend. Winter! And we have plenty of it. I can share more if you ever should have any questions. I chose the interior which can be harsher of an environment but the lack of large population can make this a nice quiet and traffic free paradise. The Matsu valley appears to be a nice compromise for someone wanting to be closer to civilization.

Brian, I’ll have to research that breed you mentioned. Right now Antolian Shepard’s are at the top of my list.  Over the past year I’ve been exploring dog breeds as I hope to find a protector for chickens, geese, and other birds and a goat when it’s time for animals.
