Can I just jam a cutting into the ground or do I need to do the whole soak it in water until it starts rooting?  How small of a cutting can I expect success with?

I've had good success with willow just sticking the cuttings in the ground. 1/4 inch to 1 inch seems to root a lot easier if available.
