Hi,

Looking for a good deal on tree pots.  Where do you get yours?  I've done tree propagation projects over the last 3 winters and ended up with ever more seedling trees that require temporary potting -some for a year or two.  I'm talking about plastic pots of 2 gallon capacity or so.  I've got chestnuts, Toona and now a bunch of metasequoia that need to go in bigger pots. Looking for sleeves of 100 or something like that.  I've exhausted my supply of often recycled pots, buckets, etc.  Local outlets have got ridiculously pricey.  Any suggestions appreciated.

The size options are infinite, low shipping weight, and they are better for the seedling roots because they can breath. Also they can be planted directly into the ground and they will dissolve.

The second option can be reused and will last longer than the cheaper ones...

Honestly, keep your eyes peeled on craigslist. I have hundreds of pots of various sizes that I got for free from nurseries that either upgraded/replaced them, or went out of business. I still see more offered within a 45 min drive of me all the time. Not sure if it will be the same in your area, but it seems like a gold mine.

I got literally dozens of BIG pots from when my city went on a tree-planting binge. Saw them putting in the trees, asked the guys where the pots the trees came in were going (to the dump). Got as many as I could haul away for free. My suggestion would be to talk to people who do landscaping.
(not sure where you are, but if there is a big campus type place, that would be ideal- corporate campus, school campus, whatever.)

We just got some for free from a local nursery -- they gave us some of a size they no longer use. I see them on the side of the road all the time too, having blown out of yards.

I enjoy starting Walnut trees from seed, and Walnuts tend to have roots that go deep fast but don't spread out as fast. So I was looking for pots that are deep but without a large diameter; otherwise, each pot uses more soil than necessary and takes up more room when transporting the trees to permanent homes.

I did not find such pots locally, but was referred to a supplier in Oregon:

Steuwe & Sons (https://stuewe.com/)

They have a large variety of pots specifically for trees.
For example, 6" diameter x 12" deep, or 6" diameter x 18" deep.

If you are planning to keep the trees in pots for two years, the 18" deep pots might be better; otherwise, there is not a big difference in price between them and the 12" pots.

However, the cost of shipping can be surprisingly high, especially depending where you live.
Often higher than the cost of the pots themselves, so they recommend ordering at least 20 pots at a time.
Also, they ship by UPS, so if you are not within the US, there will also be a brokerage charge, plus taxes and duties on the brokerage service. Ouch! So, think long-term and, if you order, order a quantity once so you never have to re-order.
