If you don't know what that is, it is a new technology for federated internet.  It allows users to control their content themselves while also sharing the post from the people they follow.

Think of it like twitter(mastodon) or youtube(peertube) or soundcloud(funkwhale) but there is not one server, there are thousands and each one can choose what content they want to share.  Each server has a "federated stream" and a local stream. They can also follow the other types, so a mastodon user could follow a funkwhale user.

https://fediverse.party/ if you want to read all that stuff.

I setup a mastodon and a peertube recently for our property in northern Michigan.  I would love to follow some fellow permies that talk about, well all things permie.

Have you ever heard the phrase, "if the service is free, you are the product."

Right now even permies.com is trying to track me with google analytics, and then google is going to resell that data.

If Big Paul is reading this, please consider using open source.  It is the permaculture of the internet.  https://matomo.org/free-software/

I can read the code of my social media platform.  There is not a room of techs with social worker degrees trying to find out how to manipulate my timeline for political gain.

I did not expect to go all open source disciple on that.

There is a lot to it, but for the most part it is run by the users for the user, instead of as a business.

If you want more specifics, look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse

ActivityPub is the widest used protocol for federation right now, but Zot is gaining traction.  Here is an example of what the creator is thinking:

The Zot Manifesto

You have the right to a permanent internet identity which is not associated with what server you are currently using and cannot be taken away from you by anybody, ever.
You have the right to refuse/reject or possibly moderate comments on your posts by anybody you don't know.
You also have the right to not allow them to comment on your posts in the first place, until such time as they have earned your trust.
You have the right to show your photos and videos to anybody you desire and also NOT show them to anybody you desire.
If your software does not implement these rights, you have the right to fix it or replace it.

I sent you a follow request Patrick.  I love that instance.  I use freeBSD as my daily driver.

Yeah, but does being a ninja come with a dental plan? And what about this tiny ad?
