Food Scraps

I just watched a great talk on TED about the global food waste scandal:

He recommends feeding your food waste to pigs, but I know you can also compost them. What is the most efficient method of taking food waste and putting them back to work?

pigs, chickens, black soldier fly larvae (then fed to fish or chickens), compost. Depends on the type of scraps, but all of them get reused in our house.

From what I recall, compost should be limited to "Vegetation" type of foods and not the meats or dairy (Milk, cream, etc..) eggs and egg shells ok. Basically avoiding the 'FATS' in the compost.

of course the yard waste and dirt too is encouraged.

The most efficient method is the one each individual will actually use in their own day to day life. Some people like to make compost heaps, some people like sheet composting, some people like worm composting, some people like keeping pigs, some people like keeping chickens, some people like to raise black soldier fly larvae to feed to their fish. There are so many methods, all are good, in my opinion.

'They' say that all the time, and I imagine if there's hungry critters around, I might think twice about it.
I don't though, and I also don't have livestock.
Actually, I do: gazillions of them cavorting in the compost!
If I put something potentially whiffy on the pile, I try and bury it a bit.
The pile's always covered with old carpet, which lets it breathe, but also keeps things in or out.
