DIY Buckwheat Hull Mattress Kits - Looking for Hulls!

Does anyone have access to clean, fresh buckwheat, millet or rice hulls? My Northeast supplier is drying up so I wanted to know if anyone knows of a good, inexpensive source where I can purchase in bulk (I buy about 700 pounds at a time). They do not need to be certified organic, just organically grown but dust free is key. I also wanted to share how easy it is to make your own, natural mattress by filling tubes of cotton fabric with buckwheat hulls and twisting them together (no links as I do not want to self promote), I just wanted to reach out to the community who may have knowledge of where to find this most valuable by-product in the US! You can use Dinkel spelt (or german wheat or whatever it is called) as well. It is well known to fill the very best pillows.

you could try Lone Pine Enterprises in Carlisle Arkansas. They grow organic rice, soybeans and wheat. We are going there tomorrow for our annual org. brown basmati rice trip for us and a few friends. I have tried to get just a small amount of rice hulls but my understanding was the hulls were marketed in bulk only. I imagine the basmati hulls would smell wonderful, at least for awhile.

Lynne - funny that I should find this post here. We actually bought a pattern from you last fall and have just now completed our pods and are looking for filling... I'm having a hard time swallowing the cost of buckwheat hulls - the best I can find is around $2 with/or plus shipping. Which is astronomical considering I just bought 10 lbs of buckwheat seeds at my local supply store for that price.

We made enough pods for two queen size mattresses, so we need 350 lbs of hulls... at this point we are looking for and considering alternatives.

If you have a true "Feed & Seed" type store in your region, check them out.

Our 'local' F&S has rice hulls in their bedding/litter section.
(Like $14 for a 50# bag - probably a lot cheaper if you buy a pallet load.)
