Hi everyone, my property has no surface water on it. I want water, and I want it the cheapest and easiest way possible, without being cheap and dumb. (cheap and easy = good. Cheap and dumb = bad).

Some sort of pond would be best, I suppose, because I have no idea how to create a river. It would be used as a water source for livestock (Chickens, rabbits, goats, cattle and possibly hogs, but none yet). I would want it to not run dry, not stink, not get filled with gunk and funk, and remain clear and safe for the livestock to drink from it.

Has anyone done this? How have you done it?
I have seen several people doing hand-dug ponds. Is it worth it? Do they hold water? How do you circulate the water? How do you keep it from running dry? Do you know an easier way? Does it fill up with gunk and funk? What do you do then? If you had to do it again, would you? Or would you get water a different way?

I am a zone 5 or 6 north american climate with about 50 inches of precipitation a year.

I think the parameters for the water are too restrictive.
Can you collect water from a roof, tank it so it does nor soak or evaporate away?

I would recommend looking at the work of Brad Lancaster:
