Hi Permies,
it is sure for everyone interesting to bring a delicate "tropic" here...
As
project manager in Taiwan (soon Farmer in Thailand) I am invited many times by our subcontractors and clients for a beer or for dinner.
Yesterday then my alarm bells went off:
They served locally grown white Truffles.
My first thought was I must be very special that the CEO of the subcontractor was willing to spend a fortune and add to almost every bit that was served Truffles.
The taste was very close to the expensive overrated Diamant of Perigord (melanosporum vit)
Well, at least a very close taste for a culinary deep flyer than I am.
But my excitement went out of control and almost every guest had his/her phone in their hand to find out what's all about.
We found out the following:
The Truffle is the indigenous Taiwanese white truffle (Tuber lithocarpii) and has been successfully farmed recently.
It likes warmer weather and the soil needs to have ph 7.5 - 8.5
The fractional flow
should be around 4 or only slightly below
it lives symbiotic with various
local trees from Oaks to Fir
It seems one of the only truffles which also grow in areas without 4 strict separated seasons
Also they seem to grow on
roots of evergreen trees
The Chef joined in and told that the truffles require trees with
Carbon sugar rich sap - I might be lost in translation in this one.
Also he mentioned that you can shred a whole truffle in a sterile agar agar (malt added) solution and if you see mycelium growing inoculate your chosen tree saplings and plant them.
The rest is waiting for some years...
Then it was 23:30, everyone became "slightly" too drunk and we ended up off topic.
But this is what I gathered so far...
NOW:
Imagine you as
permie find (grow) these in abundance in your food forest?
Ok below here comes YOUR input.
If we all put our knowledge together this
thread might bring up far more than that during a beer bashing in Taiwan..
Regarding permies forum:
I post many things here, much learned the hard way other by experiences I made in 50 years of
gardening and gathering.
many things I never would post in other (smack talking) forums, but these members here really deserve the exchange of knowledge and if I or somebody hit the jackpot, I personally believe it will end up in good hands.
Cheers
Will (See's hubby)
