I'm very lucky to live where I can grow veggie year round. My fall/winter garden "should" be well on its way by now. Summer veggies "should" be cleared out and long gone. But (yes you knew it was coming). But I have not removed anything, planted anything, or even watered in a couple of weeks, maybe longer. I could say it's been way to hot to plant fall veggies, and that would be true. Mostly it's because I was totally burnt out. My garden didn't do well this summer, and I was just done. Also I've been enjoying making stuff out of the free pallets I got from work.
Thankfully because of the strange weather I can still get some fall veggies planted. I went into the garden after work this evening, to decide what to do this weekend, and was amazed by what I found. I expected to see a lot of sad, and dead veggies. Nope, there's a lot of very productive veggies in there. More pepper, eggplant, and tomatoes then I got all summer. Even the veggies that didn't make it have veggies drying I can use for seed. I was so excited. It's a little gift to renew the love I usually feel in my garden. It also gives me hope, and makes me feel as though I'm on the right path. The hugel beet is working, I don't think much would be alive much less producing in the heat this fall in a more traditional garden. I haven't watered in weeks, didn't add anything like fertilizer or compost tea or anything since before I planted this spring. Don't use anything for bugs. Yet things are thriving. It's awesome, it's permaculture.
