Joshua, so far I haven’t found any apps that actually take measurements, as opposed to just compiling data from places nearby.

We finally got to start the cob floor at Allerton Abbey this morning! I am so excited! We also got to mix our cob on tarps instead of in the wheelbarrow, which was much more fun.

Jennifer Richardson wrote:Travis, we are currently considering what sort of monitoring equipment to use in the thermal inertia test—tracking thermometers, something more like a small weather station, etc. If you have any recommendations and/or wishes for variables you would like to see monitored, please do chime in!

I certainly have nothing against something that is simple, that is for sure. In my experience, things that are complex break. That may, or may not, include cell phone apps. I have no experience on that as I am one of 7% of the people in the USA who does NOT have a cell phone!

My only real suggestion is to have something that does measure wind speed. I know the WOFATI by design is wind resistant, but wind does funky things with heat in a building. I deal with wind here almost every day of the year, and know on high wind days it creates a kind of vacuum and sucks the heat out of a building. It would be interesting to see if wind speed outside, affects the heat within the building, and to what degree.  IF there is minimal heat loss at high wind speed, then that is a feather in the cap of a WOFATI for sure.

But I am not only excited to have someone in the WOFATI over the winter, but truly excited for YOU! Good for you to take on this challenge, and I hope I can encourage you in this endeavor. I know this offer has been out there for a long time, and there was no takers, so many of us are very proud of you. So many variables, but what an adventure!

Travis,

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I really appreciate all the support from the Permies community.

I definitely agree that wind speed would be valuable to measure. I also wonder if measuring humidity would be worthwhile? And rainfall would also be nice to know, since we don’t have good data for how much rain the Lab actually gets.

Spent the afternoon at Base Camp working on the patio—almost finished! Then spent some time wandering around the gardens and hugels before sharing dinner with the other boots (Thanks for the delicious dinner, Fred!)
