Laundry- By hand or with machine? Where does the soapy water go?

Has anyone built a house with hook ups to wash laundry? I am trying to decide if that should be left to a hand washing job or if there should be a washer. I have plenty of water on property.
What do you do with your soapy water? If I use borax I don't want it to go into compost or a place where animals will be near. Any thoughts, experiences on how you handle laundry in your home?

Hi, Magenta, We are not satisfied with our set up but at the moment our washing machine water drains downhill from our home into a brushy area in the woods. We use a minimum of Ecos brand detergent and nothing else. I quit making the borax/washing soda/bar soap mixture because of the borax but still I am not happy with this arrangement. I think the excess water (not the detergent) in the area has killed a couple large trees. I think we need to work on a way to move the drain pipe occasionally. On the other hand, I washed clothes out by hand when our sons were babies...diapers too! it was fine at the time but I don't think I would do it again. I guess it would use less water but maybe not less detergent. There are several here who have grey water systems. I'm sure someone will respond with that information for you. good luck!

You should use soapnut, its just anut that you soak in water, and doesn't have Sodium/Borate/etc.
I would just send me washwater to the garden.
Dont get a drying machine.
Wash/Spin dry with a industrial salad spinner(to get your clothes dry enough to hang inside the house in the winter)
Wash with a wonder washer (plunger looking thing), its vacuum action forces water thru the clothes dislodging dirt.
Sunshine/UV is a natural bleaching agent.
For stubborn spot you can use a brush and maybe some oxyclean.
