Would a COOP land ownership be a viable foot in the door for a transitional town. With the cost of land being so prohibitive in some areas would creating a COOP to purchase property and farm operation work?

Robert,

Thanks for this post. I am looking into this topic right now at my property in the columbia gorge. Not only is and costs prohibitive but the infrastructure start up usually is as well. The beauty of a land ownership coop, especially using a non-profit model is that people can "own" what they have worked on. I know a lot of folks who spent years working on another persons property just to have them sell.  I also think it is a great way to have a multi-generational impact such as starting an environmental school and incorporating end of life work.

I hope we can have some serious dialogue around this.

I just see many possibilities. A landowner after creating a COOP could have a vetting process for potential members of a like mind, the sale of shares used for infrastructure costs. Hopefully that capital would allow purchases that would be interest free. Increasing businesses equity.
Or a group of like minded folks buying property for the COOP.
A second tier of income for the COOP perhaps a CSA.
A farmstand could morph into a store that COOP's with local artisans.
Living in Oregon you are aware of land use laws that are tough. But maybe seasonal on site campsites for a permaculture experience, teaching opportunity where in a Tom Sawyerish way you would get participants that pay to play.

I just turned 50 and have downsized into 2 trailers. I have been searching for a place to either have a garden and chickens alone, or figure out how to find stable people and also manage ponds animals ...more

I like oregon. I used to live in albany. I like the weather and fertility.

Enabling young families to sell microgreens flowers ?
Hosting classes. Canning. Whatever
With
others to purchase and maintain equipment to get those markets functioning
Is the special sauce

Bringing together an owner and manager who agree on costs
And collecting young talent who will stay if they are kept solvent is the recipe. I hate to say it, but lots of social media would be the easy way to gain attention from candidate stage all the way to marketing output. If i do buy a place down around eugene or grants pass, ill hope to find people wanting to set up their passion and help rewild and regenerate

You would be much easier to understand if you took that bucket off of your head. And that goes for the tiny ad too!
