Greetings! I wanted to share photos of a
hay feeder that I built for our 3 sheep. As winter approaches we have started feeding hay to our sheep. During the warmer months, we have been rotationally grazing them around our 1 acre
yard.
We weren’t sure what to use to hold the square hay bales. Since we recently moved to rural Pennsylvania from Queens, NYC, we had a foldable shopping cart that we weren’t using here. The shopping cart would ALMOST accommodate a standard square bale of hay. With some effort and squeezing, the bale would fit down inside the cart. The sheep could pull hay out and munch it. Unfortunately, a lot of hay ended up wasted on the ground. (Photos 1 & 2)
After looking around
online, I settled on a design inspired by plans found on several university websites. The plans were dated 1914. Photo 3 was something I found online that looked similar to what was in the old plans.
Anyway here’s what I came up with. (Photos 4 & 5). So far they’ve only knocked it over a couple of times. The ewes have a tendency to try to eat from the top. They step on the trough to reach the top. This can make it tip over. The original plans called for sheets of
wood across the top of the hay rack with only an opening on the bottom of the V. This might help discourage the climbing behavior.
Feel free to share other ways of feeding hay to sheep in the wintertime here. Thanks.

“They will build houses and live in them, And they will plant vineyards and eat their fruitage. They will not build for someone else to inhabit, Nor will they plant for others to eat. For the days of my people will be like the days of a tree, And the work of their hands my chosen ones will enjoy to the full.” - Isaiah 65:21, 22
