(Well, my recent musings on 1) teaching kids Permaculture, and 2) those 8 forms of Capital that Permaculturists identify have now intersected, which has led me to this thought:)

Perhaps the best hypothetical education for a child would be one that helps children to access and grow all of the 8 Forms of Capital from the earliest days...

  • Intellectual
  • knowledge of essential topics and their interconnections
  • Experiential
  •  field trips and science experiments, apprenticeships and field observations
  • Cultural
  •   songs, poems, stories, folk tales and fairy stories, novels, literature
  • Social
  •  good manners, relationships with peers, relationships with faculty, staff, volunteers, and maintenance crew
  • Spiritual
  • presumably being raised in the parents' religion
  • Living
  •  a garden plot for each child, with seeds to start and plants to tend
  • Financial
  •  a piggy bank and/or savings account, with small allowance or chores to earn money
  • Material
  •  toys, games, books, art materials, clothes, etc. and instructions on how to properly take care of them

While homeschooling this next semester, I will be paying particular attention to teaching about the Forms of Capital I seem to have been most neglecting!
