You are outside my region, but that being said, I often used a custom sawyer on my farm because of time. I have a few of my own sawmills, but logging took
enough time, and I could just have a sawyer come in, and in a day or two he could produce a lot of lumber for me that I just never could in the same amount of time. For me it was very cost effective. I got a lot more lumber than what I would have gotten by buying it from a lumber
yard, and even with custom sawing factored in, it was also a lot cheaper.
For my custom sawyer, he made a full time living at it, but had to travel a lot so that he was constantly sawing.
It is because of rough sawn lumber though that we do NOT have the National Building Code. Many people here use rough sawn lumber to build with, and adopting the National Building Code would have required only stamped lumber be used. For that reason it was rejected. Most towns here have no building codes making rough sawn lumber in higher demand.
