So, I recently moved to north Florida and I'm learning all the plants on my property. I've identified at least 2 varieties of smilax, but this one is stumping me.
It's huge. The young shoots are coming out of the ground almost an inch in diameter. Grows fast, too. I have one shoot that was 6 ft tall only a few days ago and is 12 ft now. I can't get any pics of the leaves as they are 50 ft up in the oak tree.
So it's the vine with five leaves? If so, I think that is Virginia creeper. It is considered toxic to humans, but beneficial to some wildlife. It is not allowed on my acre, there is plenty of the stuff in the wild.

No, it's the thing that looks like a giant asparagus spear.
Without a picture of the leaves, I don't feel anyone can do an ID. I have to see the flower on most plants.
I do feel you might have it correct that it is some form of smilax.
