For your amusement ... here's  a char burn in my "semi open kiln."

Usually I stuff branches in the open top and pack the coals through the side port. Makes good char.

Except this time the wind shifted and there's tall, dry grass everywhere, so the screen had to go on top. That meant I had to cut branches and feed through the side. Well dammit, if I'm going to do all that work I'm going to get some extra value!

So I chopped up some old sprouty potatoes from the bin, chucked them in an old canner full of water, and cooked 'em up. Not for eating, but for my compost bin. I've heard that cooking them into simple starch helps supercharge the composting process.

BTW, every item you see was scrounged for free. I'm easily amused.

Way to be resourceful.  In my way of thinking, you are eating the potatoes indirectly. Instead of feeding you, they are feeding the microbes in the soil, which feed you.
