This is totally random, but I am wondering if anyone has used a salad spinner as a spin cycle/dryer for clothes? I need it for clothes and sheep hides. I've been kicked out of too many laundromats for washing and drying hides...haha.

I don't know about a dryer - but it makes sense it would at least be a small capacity wringer, and that alone would seriously speed up dry time.

Perhaps you could put the loaded spinner inside a modified solar oven so you could spin it after it gets up to temp to get both heat and spin?

Whatever you try, please post so I can find out how it works out.

Dennis and Lisa : In some laudramats they have a high speed extraction machine that spins out more water than even the best of the Commercial Washers ! It can
cut into the time that you spend drying clothes in a dryer ! But, just like the common washing machine if the load is off balance it shuts down on safety !

A salid spinner will work if you can balance the load carefully , if it wants to jump away from you or walk across the floor, your load is off balance ! So Yes, I think
it will work. I have used Washing machines to speed up cleaning fiddleheads where there was grit and silt from where i picked them on a Flood plan ! G'luck !

For the Future/Good of our Craft ! Be safe, keep warm ! As always, your questions and comments are solicited and are Welcome ! PYRO-MAGICALLY Big AL !

I am not sure a salad spinner would be large enough to even spin out a couple pair of socks. Now something giant sized like a human powered salad type spinner would work. I watch a lot of youtubes for human powered appliances and have seen many people come up with spinners, blenders, grain grinders and many more.

Check out this salad spinner video. The spinner is a pedal powered washing machine. More appropriately sized, maybe what you want?

If your shoulders are good you can do what is called "wuzzing". When I was spinning and washing fleeces by hand this was what I was told to do to get more of the water out by centrifugal force. A net bag or even a pillow case works...put in a few clothes or one hide and make like a windmill with your arm...holding on to the bag opening:) It is an outside sport and definitely gets the water out. I didn't catch if you are washing by hand? That is the hard part...getting that excess water out so stuff will dry. I still do this sometimes when I have a lot of greens to wash...you can control the force pretty easy. And they still make hand crank wringers.

Judith, I'm liking your idea of doing a windmill motion with a net bag. I'm going to try that with some sheep hides.

When I mentioned salad spinner I'm thinking the large orange ones you see in Johnny's catalogs, like this http://www.johnnyseeds.com/p-7650-dynamic-salad-spinner-2-5-gal-.aspx A friend got one for $20 at Washington State surplus.
