This should really be my zone one. Right off my back porch. But it came with the house, butterfly bush, Japanese Maple shrub, brambles and various understory natives and weedy things. Should I forget about this area as a veggie garden? Chickens or goats not an option here.

Its always a pity to wipe out existing growth, but can you plant around them until you take over?

Bethany, your picture is beautiful!  It would be a shame to do away with that lovely area so why not just plant veggies around the existing plants?

Gardeners do well in urban areas with small gardens around their houses.

There isn’t much room for planting around things, but I could experiment with a little party that has bare patches. I would have to water since it appears we’ve entered our PNW dry season. Or I could winter sow this fall and see what survives. We also have lots of wild rabbits.
