Can I do a rocket mass heater? I have a space that is 4X4 feet, with the stove vent in the center above. I have a 700 sf house, divided into two rooms equal size. The mass heater would go in one, directly in front of the always open door to the other room that is one foot higher. The house is very well insulated. One room is straw bale and the other room is stick frame with R19 in walls, R30 ceiling, and reflectix foil on walls and ceiling.

Can I build it in 16sf with the mass going vertically instead of horizontally? Could the pipe be spiraled up? There is a six inch stove pipe in the center of the space. How many twists and turns can I do and still get draft? I am excited by the possibility of doing this because my husband is now 69 years old and firewood cutting is starting to be a serious problem. We heat solely with wood in a big bear sheepherder cook stove and it takes about 4.5 cords of firewood per winter. If I manage to get a rocket mass heater, then we would cut down firewood needs by a whole lot.

Thank you for any help.

Switching from electric heat to a rocket mass heater reduces your carbon footprint as much as parking 7 cars
