I thought I should share how I made myself a blanket coat from thrifted finds.
I have a contact wool allergy but liked the look of coats made from old wool blankets and when we got one in a box lot, it seemed worth trying.
To start, I looked at a few styles of the coats and decided to go for one where the blanket is folded in half, over the shoulder line and the cut up the front to open the front quarters. A piece of lining fabric was cut to the same size as the blanket, the outer edges were quickly finished with a folded hem and then it was pinned to the blanket and cut the same way.
I draped them together on my body form and pinned a "L" shaped spot under the arms to makes "sleeves" and sides for it that were then sewn down.
I had found a silk tie that was a good colour match and it was opened up and the support fabric removed. The wide part was cut and made into 2 pockets for the front. The rest of the length was sewn down to make a neckline that not only gives protection from the wool but also nicely finished the raw edges of the blanket and lining fabric. A scrap of the silk was also added to the back of the neck to reinforce the stress point on the weave of the blanket.
The silk tab from the back of the tie was used to line and support the button hole and a large, vintage button was added.
The raw edges, below the tie collar were handsewn with a thick line of embroidery thread over stitches.
That's it! It was done in a day and it can still be used as a lap blanket, when needed.
