never before, but now twice in one year we get fly stuck sheep. Professional say it a bad bad year for maggot and sheep combo
First one cure with H2O2, vigious remove maggot, 2 day then iodine for 2 timimes day for a week. This was foot so easy to get to. All better in a few ddays but yuck!!.
Second one the professional rubs moter oil on the sheep. 1 ltr, twice a day. Sheered the sheep first because strike on back. But magot damage skin and the skin grew hot like infected and sheep now poop brown water, so we don't know about more moter oil. Want better option.
Best cure for fly strike:
Prevention
- diet/minerals right for location
- good air flow
- encourage chicken to be in the sheep yard
- more???
- but sometimes do all the things isn't enough
Cure
- bug killing chemicals hard to get here in enough amount for a whole sheep. Also stinks and sheep hate it. Not organic farm so let's save for emergancy.
- H2O2 is the same as the medical 3% kind. Affordable-ish at $4 per bottle - 1 to 3 bottle per day. this itches the sheep but the maggot fall dead if they get enough. But sometimes the maggot too thick, so have to scrub the maggot, pour, scrub, pour... having chicken to eat the aalmost-dead maggot helps
- motor oil??? Have feeling this isn't organic sertified either.
- infection is big problem. Iodine helps but the bug seem to survive just fine
- silver spray is expencive and just make bug strong and health so they can eat sheep faster
- more ideas???
