It's that time again, the Farmer's Almanac has their winter predictions out.

Image from the article here:
Farmers’ Almanac Winter 2024 Extended Weather Forecast

They are selling their almanac or a membership for more details.
Interesting to me, I've already been upgrading my cold weather system here. We used some of it during the super high heat/heat index days we had, anything that blocks cold coming in the windows will block heat too.
It's time to consider it again!

What can you insulate? Can you make window covers somehow? Start thinking and looking for stuff to do so now!

I picked up a couple of good thick blankets cheap at a thrift store today, they were 4.00 each. Later in the season, if there are any there, they'll be 18-25.00. Right now they are still in "get this bulky stuff out of the way" mode, and that's when I like to shop.

Sooo... if they're right, the southern third of the middle of the States is going to get extremes - including Texas again.

Further east chilled and stormy - does that mean more stormy than usual? More chilly than usual?

However, as you pointed out, many of the defenses we build for one problem (cold) can be just as useful when heat is the issue. The same temperature in calm weather, won't cool a house as quickly as it will if it's blowing a gale - particularly if your house is leaky.

My biggest bang for time/money would be a better drape on the front window. The problem is that plants live there. I can't put the plants between the drapes and the glass. Not a lot  of width to work with either. This is where intelligent design would have helped sooo... much. If the window ledge was 4" wider, it would be so much more useful!
