Has anybody bought the giant aloe leaves at Walmart? I got one and cut it open and YIKES...it is oozing yellow fluid that smells like fried chicken! Is that normal??

Aloin is the sap part of the aloe plant. It smells like BO to me when first cut! It subsides though with a bit of air time.

I looked online and saw several plants that are Aloe.  Which one did you buy?

Or did you just buy leaves?

There are several different aloe plants so knowing which one that is might help.

I don't think the yellow pulp is unusual though I am only familiar with a few of the varieties.

Anne, it was just a leaf. Didn't say what variety.

That's right, Anne. They're about two feet long and I think they're supposed to be used in smoothies. I don' think I could handle that XD

Its strange, I remember owning a aloe plant that I could pluck the leaves and it didn't have this smelly sap in it but my current plants all need some hang-time to remove the smell. It is kind of off putting! I'm going to look into Aloe... breeds? Maybe there is something out there that limits the sap.

Exactly, Tim! The little ones I have grown don't smell like a thing. But whew these big ones are nasty. It could be the breed but I wonder if it's the size. I'm surprised anybody buys them retail, kind of odd!
