I think my biggest question is how efficient is succession gardening versus regular gardening where one would plant everything that they would eat in a year and preserve whatever won’t be eaten right away.

I just worked out a plan for Calabrese broccoli succession planting. My goal is to harvest 2 stalks every 2 weeks. I added a 3rd pot for each 2-week shelf because 1) not all seeds will make it; and 2) the 18”x48” shelves will be more stable outside and if I stick to 2 stalks/broccolis it will be a lot of wasted space. I’m thinking growing in containers is more manageable for getting vegetables started, watered, and weeded. However, I need to keep the start-up costs down as well. After the broccoli tryouts and tweaking, I’d like to implement the plan on other winter vegetables.

This is an exterior planting, but one succession planting I do each year is potatoes, cabbage, and onions around the edge.  The cabbage will grow until the potatoes catch up with them and then the potatoes will shade them through the summer months. I've had cabbage into July.

If you are going to the sun, make sure to go at night. Use this tiny ad's space ship:
