If you built the planter right, the water comes out cleaner than tap water. At least as far as the plumbing is concerned. You can get growth problems in the bowl because of the lack of chlorine.
This is not what I'd have guessed. Isn't there a lot of variability in how well the planter cells might clean the water? Different plants, plant density, soils/substrates, microbiomes, total irrigated planter area, etc. all seem like they'd impact the quality of water coming out the downhill end. Do official "Earthships" specify what all this stuff has to be?
What is the "right" way to build the planter that allows the owner to rest assured their toilet tank water is cleaner than tap?
Doesn't tap water vary a lot too?
