Putting this in "Earthships" instead of "greywater" because Earthships specifically include this element of the greywater cycle, where water goes from sinks and drains to planters, then after the planters it's used to flush the toilets. I just have a few questions about this I haven't seen in the Earthship videos:

1. Is there any additional filtration or treatment needed between planter and toilet tank (other than the obvious, keeping out dirt and tiny rocks and stuff)?

2. Does this mean there is an additional dedicated pump or pressure tank needed, to get the water back "uphill" from the bottom of the lowest planter cell to the toilet tanks?

3. If yes to (2), does post-planter water tend to degrade the pump/pressure tank? If not, how?

4. What about the effects of greywater on the toilet innards?

I know the answer to 2.  Yes, you need a dedicated pump and lines. It used to be a 12v boat bilge pump down the pipe at the grey water outlet feeding into an RV pump (so the rv pump didn’t have to deal with suction head). It had a sock filter on the bilge. No pressure tank needed.

If you built the planter right, the water comes out cleaner than tap water. At least as far as the plumbing is concerned. You can get growth problems in the bowl because of the lack of chlorine.

I don't know what most of those terms mean, but I have time to learn them. In the meantime I got my answer anyway. Thanks for the info!

(Now I'm imagining an Earthship where the toilet is down below the greenhouse, and you've gotta march back upstairs to wash your hands after...)

This is not what I'd have guessed. Isn't there a lot of variability in how well the planter cells might clean the water? Different plants, plant density, soils/substrates, microbiomes, total irrigated planter area, etc. all seem like they'd impact the quality of water coming out the downhill end. Do official "Earthships" specify what all this stuff has to be?

What is the "right" way to build the planter that allows the owner to rest assured their toilet tank water is cleaner than tap?

Doesn't tap water vary a lot too?

Thanks, I found it interesting to read, but if my questions were answered there I must have missed it (which is possible, I have been known to ditz out if I've been staring at a screen too long).
