I've been working on a wofati design that is small
enough (less than 350 sq ft.) that it's legally exempt from certain
local statutes, while still having enough room for comfortable habitation. It may or may not technically meet either of those qualifications, but it's the best attempt I've made at it yet. It's partially inspired by viking longhouses. It's 16' foot tall and a little more than that long, and the main structure is only 8' wide, meaning relatively easy spans and no posts in the middle of the room. At least, theoretically. I'm not an engineer and haven't consulted with any.
It's got a
rocket mass heater built in, with 20+ feet of tubing in the thermal mass bench. It's also got a 100 sq ft.
root cellar attached.
It's got an uphill patio, cut into a southern-facing hillside in a slight wedge shape in order to resist lateral forces. This space could be converted into a
greenhouse at some point.
It could be a little simpler, for example the roof could be more of a plain gable rather than poking up at the ends, but I felt like it needed a little bit of stylistic flair and hopefully a little more sunlight. Or, it could even be quite a bit simpler and the triangular sections removed, leaving the main structure a simple 16'x8' rectangle, but I think getting light from 4 directions rather than just 2 makes the added complexity worth it.
Here's a link to the sketchup warehouse, where you can download the design and edit it to your heart's content:
