Hi ya !
As the title says I've been off grid homesteading for a minute or two. lol Raised two daughters on my own here who have both grown up and moved on now.  I've been around off grid and homesteading forums for over 20 years as BiggKidd some of you may know me from there.  I have 30 odd acres in south central Va about 30 miles north of the NC state line.  Been here since Jan 08 when I moved my family out of the city for a better way of life. It's two miles to pavement, powerlines and neighbors and I like it that way. I often go weeks without seeing another soul which is nice but also getting a little old. That's why I joined here today, although pretty sure I had an account at some point in the past. Ideally I'd like to meet a like minded female who would want to join me in this next step of life. It's tough to meet anyone when I seldom leave home. Thanks to MS I no longer work as I am partially disabled. Nothing terrible just not able to go go go all the time like I did back in the day.
Back when we moved here we were in a 20 ft camper and the place was nothing but scrub timberland. Since then I've been slowly clearing land and built a small, almost tiny house (read shack) lol. I've been dreaming of building my dream home here forever from materials off the land. There are two creeks along two of the property lines where I plan to get stones to build with. I have the tools and knowledge but not much in the way of money or as much energy as I'd like.
At the moment I have a handful of animals including Dexter cattle, American Guinea Hogs and Nubian goats. Coyotes got my chickens last fall, I'll be replacing them here soon. I also have my youngest daughters dog and cat here while she's in college.  I have a little over an acre of garden / crop ground I've been working on for years. Also started building a small pond and a half walipini  type greenhouse. The north wall is cut in to a south facing slope and the frame / roof is free cycled cart covers from a defunct grocery store that went out of business.  It just needs the north wall finished and the south & east facing glazing done.
To be honest I've let the place get run down here the last several years. It's a lot for one person to much in fact but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I would love to find the right woman to share it all with to work toward a common goal of a sustainable thriving life.
DIY is the way of life around here and has been my way forever. As a boy I was a Boy Scout and the one thing that stuck with me was BE PREPARED and I have always lived life that way.
If any of you want or need advice on what does NOT work for life homesteading off grid then ask away. Trust me I've about found every way to screw up there is! LMAO
In all seriousness in the past I was in construction and mechanics. I've built and done a lot of different things over the years. Until MS got to me I had my own company from the age of 19 until MS hit at 34 when I had the pleasure of learning to walk and talk again.  Since then I have learned loads about how to do more with less. I'd rather play around making and trying new things than pulling weeds and growing crops. But it all needs to happen...  I am mechanically inclined and computer hopeless. LoL

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

Welcome!

Excellent post. I just moved to costal Chesapeake, VA with my family as well. Not nearly off grid though!

In the last few years we have been here I have an apiary going… built the dream garden… planted fruit trees…. And Dexters too! Plus a good bit more. Just getting started though.
