According to my neighbour, who has been experimenting with apples - the rootstock should be from the same fruit group - in your case a peach, or nectarine. OK to grow from seed, then graft on the variety you want, or several if the rootstock tree is big enough. Best of luck - I tried with apples, slips supplied by helpful neighbour, grafting onto an apple grown from seed - they don't produce to type. All went well until the feral deer decided the tree was great food.
