Seedlings from hybrid fruit?

Does anyone have experiences to share around germinating seeds from plumcuts, pluots, apriums, and the like? How was the fruit from these seedling varieties?

I have been growing apricot and peach trees from seeds now for many years, and I've had excellent success. However, my efforts to plant and grow the seeds of hybrid pluots (Flavor Supreme) and certain Japanese plums that probably have genes mixed in from apricots (like Shiro) have been unsuccessful. The seeds that I save from these two groups are always misshapen or shriveled and/or don't germinate.

My suggestion is that you very gently crack open a few of your hybrid seeds and inspect the embryos inside. Are they missing, misshapen or shriveled? If so, I doubt you will get any to germinate. However, if they look healthy and plump, they just might germinate if given about 4- 6 weeks of stratification in the fridge.

To stratify, soak the healthy embryos in chlorinated water for a few minutes to kill fungi. Then plant the seeds in mold-free, pre-moistened potting soil in 6 packs. Put your 6 packs in loose plastic bags and place in the fridge. Make sure they don't dry out or get moldy. After 4-6 weeks, take them out of the fridge and inspect for mold. Then place the trays under lights in a 70 F. room. You (hopefully) will get some to germinate.

If all your hybrid seed embryos look bad, then grafting or chip budding onto  myrobalan plum rootstock is your best bet. Cuttings of this group usually don't work (at least for me), but apparently using hydroponics to grow the cuttings will work. Some people also report success with plum cuttings "just stuck in the ground", but that has never worked for me, except myrobalan/cherry plums.

I'd like to hear if anyone else here has had success with hybrid fruit seeds...
