It was Permaculture that introduced me to Systems Thinking. I have read Meadows' book twice but I need to read it many more times to begin to "get" it all, there's just so much. I have been looking up info online about this topic, and though I'd create a thread to put link resources into the Permies network.

  • Introduction to Systems Thinking Good post, even better is the book excerpt PDF at the bottom of the page
  • Systems Thinking Tools: A Reference Guide Ditto: the PDF is incredible, and I am beginning my attempt to wrap my mind around this

  • I have been interested in Systems Thinking and Design Thinking which have both been trendy in the last decade or so: today I began to suspect that they are kind of the same thing.

For others that might be interested in System Thinking there are 12 Permaculture Design Principles.

Using each principle is like opening up to the whole systems thinking, providing a different perspective that can be understood at varying levels of depth and application.

    My favorite principle is Observation.

The hardest for me to remember is Use and Value Diversity.

These principles can be thought of as tools to be used in the overall Design.  Is using these tools System thinking?

    Here I discussed Observation

Is a Rocket Mass Heater aka RMH a good example of catching and storing energy?

Would building a greenhouse be a way to catch and store energy?

In case anyone wants to know all of the 12 Principles they are listed here:

Not quite ready to read yet, but want an engaging, accessible visual intro to Systems Thinking?

May I present "In a World of Systems” narrated and illustrated by David Macaulay (Yes, that David Macaulay).

    Continuing this thread...

    Complex Systems Concept: Emergence

"Emergence" is a name for what we usually mean when we say "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts". Surprising things can happen when you put things together and they might take off and do a new thing. That's what 'emergence' is, and it's one of the fascinating dimensions of systems thinking.
