Enjoyed that.

Curious how Ms. Cotten played a right-handed guitar left-handed, not reversing the string setup, low E string on the bottom. But the chords look conventional, so I wonder how she managed the tuning. Hm!

Thanks!  Yes, she was one of a kind. She played the guitar upside down entirely, not like Hendrix.  She used the 1st and middle finger to play a very intricate alternating base but played the melody with her thumb. I have never met anyone who could do what she did.  She figured it out as a kid - no way anyone could actually learn that style!  I got to spend time with Etta Baker, who was very influenced by her, so a lot of what i play comes from Mrs. Baker, Doc Watson and John Hurt.

Thank you for sharing your music!

As a side question, I would be interested to know, what sorts of herbal nutrition might you suggest for musicians? Such as plant medicines that strengthen the voice, prevent accumulation of phlegm, or strengthen the fingernails for fingerpicking?

Thanks, that is an interesting question - certainly equisetum for the nails. Sage or mullein tea would be good. Swedish bitters are always great.

Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor
This is my version of "Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor" by Mississippi John Hurt.  I learned it from Doc Watson when I was a kid.  It is a fun song to play and not very difficult.  ENJOY!

Stranger Blues

This is my version of "Stranger Blues", also known as "New Stranger Blues" or "Poor Stranger Blues".  I believe the song was originally done by Tampa Red. I do it in somewhat of a Brownie McGhee style, with an alternating boogie baseline.

Fishing Blues
This is my version of "Fishing Blues" by Ragtim Texas Henry Tomas, Taj Mahall, Doc Watson, etc.  Everyone does it their own way - different tunings and different lyrics.  I came up with this version over the years partly because I hate changing my guitar tuning and because it sounds right to my ear. It is a challenging tune and I give a detailed lesson at the end.

Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad
This is my version of Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad in a closed D position. This really shows the potential of this way of playing tunes in D.  It is a classic country blues tune, recorded by countless old time, blues, bluegrass, etc. musicians... and of course, the Grateful Dead played it HUNDREDS of times!! It is one of the most influential songs in music history and I enjoy playing around with it.

Deep River Blues
My version of "Deep River Blues" - this is a classic Delmore Brothers song that I learned from Doc Watson.  BTW, when I was discussing the chords I meant to say D diminished, not Db diminished.  It is a fun tune to play and is not very difficult - ENJOY!

Got The Blues and I Can't Be Satisfied
My version of Mississippi John Hurt's "I Got The Blues and I Can't Be Satisfied".  It is a fairly simple tune in the key of G, but it has a few tricks.  It is a very rhythmic tune that somewhat different from most John Hurt songs.

Sittin' On Top of the World
This is my version of the Mississippi Sheiks' "Sittin' On Top of the World".  It is a classic blues tune, recorded many times by Bob Wills, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson and countless others.  I play it as a country blues in the key of D. My version is a little advanced, but I also show you how you can play it more simply. I also talk some music history and reminisce about the best concert I ever attended and what a great guy Eddie Stubbs was.

This is my version of the Mississippi Sheiks' "Corrina Corrina".  It is a classic blues tune, recorded by every one from Bob Wills to Dean Martin and a thousand others.  It is an easy tune, but I also give you a western swing version that is a bit more fancy.

Sliding Delta
This is my version of Mississippi John Hurt's "Sliding Delta".  I first learned this one from Doc Watson, but his version was a little different.  But, John Hurt never seems to have played it the same way twice... so get the chords under your fingers and make it your own!  BTW, I said B flat, when I meant just B.

Hey Baby Right Away on guitar
This is my version of Mississippi John Hurt's "Hey Baby Right Away".  It is a laid back, easy going song, but there is more going on with the picking than it may seem.  BTW, a few times, I said B when I meant A. Hammer on from the open G string to A.

Shake That Thing on guitar
My version of Papa Charlie Jackson's "Shake That Thing".... more John Hurt influenced, really.  Papa Charlie was a huge star in the 20s. He played a 6 string banjo/guitar and did a lot of "hokum" songs from an earlier era. He was equally adept at blues, jazz, minstrel songs and vaudeville. This is a very easy tune, but also a lot of fun and it has a significant history.

Coffee Blues or Lovin' Spoonful on Guitar
This is my version of Mississippi John Hurt's "Coffee Blues", which is more commonly called "Spoonful Blues" or "Lovin' Spoonful". Different versions of the song were recorded by Pappa Charlie Jackson, Carlie Patton and countless others throughout the years.  It is one of the classics of the genre and fairly easy to play. Hurt's easy going, laid back style makes this one a real joy to play!

Bully Of The Town on Guitar
This is my version of Etta baker's "Bully Of The Town".  Her version this old tune is really interesting, combining old-time and Piedmont blues elements... which is appropriate for a song that began as a blues murder ballad in New Orleans int he 1890s and ended up a bluegrass standard!
