So I am looking to start up a small agriculture/permaculture business in my area. There's normally loads of open source software to use in line with expensive professional software, but I haven't seen any free good 2D landscape software for laying out a garden, orchard, or farm. Anyone got any recommendations? I am not opposed to paying $100 for a software, but I want to avoid monthly subscriptions as all I've seen are very expensive for someone with a small budget. I have a master's in sustainable agriculture, and I've taken design classes, but my hand-work on paper does not look professional. Which is why I'd prefer a software even if its very low end. Thanks for any help!

Kevin, what is more important, the look or the content.
I am old skool and prefer paper created work, its easier, and needs no power to be seen.
Perhaps spend some time drawing better.
I find it so easy to be on a job site and sketch on a pad as I talk to the customer.

Maybe qgis if you work on a larger scale?
Or Inkscape, if you work on small plots (you can import pictures as a base layer if I remember well)
