We've been given a number of cans of butter as pictured below.
I tried to get a good photo of the bottom of the can...the only thing that looks like it might be a date is upper left 15:03….but even that doesn't quite make sense?

No one seems to know how old it is.
It was found with other canned goods while cleaning out a kitchen.

All of the cans are sound, no bulges or dents.

I opened one and it smelled strongly like cultured butter.

Have used a bit and then made ghee with the remainder of the can and that came out nice but also strongly flavored.

I have only had fresh sweet butter and of course store bought sticks and am not familiar with this brand.
Is it normally strong tasting?
How long would canned butter keep?
and what could go wrong that might not be apparent visually?

I just did a quick search for you, and this stuff is apparently quite good and well-loved. I think it probably would be a cultured flavor.

The company guarantees freshness for two years, but people online claim up to decades. Apparently it depends on what the storage conditions are (like with anything canned, I'm sure). And plenty of people are on Amazon asking about how to interpret the date of manufacture (no straight answers, I'm afraid).
They say to use within 4 weeks of opening, which sounds about right for normal butter.
Whenever I've had butter go bad, it gets moldy. Other than that, only normal can issues- bulges, rust, etc- would worry me. I would store it somewhere cool and enjoy making out like a bandit!!!

thank you Tereza!
I really like the stronger taste so was hoping it was 'normal' for this butter.
The 7 cans had been stored on the floor in a coolish spot back in a corner so once the dust was washed off looked like new.
I'm glad to hear of it's longevity.

I might gradually make it all into ghee anyway as Steve doesn't like or use butter for much of anything but likes ghee for sauteing and I like butter too much 🙄
