I've just done this mini-course and I'd like to recommend it as a good introduction to soil, especially for people with no background in the subject.

It's basically a well laid out collection of course notes, videos collected from around the internet, and web links. It's not demanding, there's no homework, there's no schedule - just log on when you're in the mood to learn a bit more and do the next thing on the list. The quality of the videos is very variable, but some are excellent, and even the very basic introductory ones will help get you into the swing of things.

And yes, permaculture *does* get a mention, more than once!
